Backup your files

You can easily backup all of your files off your computer to a USB drive.

It is highly recommended to backup your files as hard drives in all devices only have a limited life span, and can fail at any time, causing loss of all your files (documents, photos, videos, etc)

While it may be possible to get your files restored from a company that does it, it can get extreamly expensive, and you will be required to pay regardless if they manage to restore a single file, all files or none.

Once you have an external USB drive plugged into your laptop (it can be a hard drive, ssd drive or memory stick) click on start and type backup, then click on Backup settings

The backup window will show, click the toggle to On then click on More Options

Click on Add a drive and Windows will search for any plugged in USB drives, when your backup drive shows, click on it

Within backup settings, there are multiple options

  1. Overview will show you statistics of your current backup.
  2. Back up now. Will start a backup of all your files immediately
  3. How often you wish to backup your files, if the backup time is missed, your computer will automatically start a backup the next time you plug in your backup drive
  4. How long to keep your backups, if you have many files, or a small backup drive, you can shorten this
  5. Back up these folders. you can select which folders in addition to the ones listed below you wish to backup
  6. exclude these folders. You can select if you do not want to backup certain folders (such as system files, or a temporary directory)
  7. Back up to a different drive. You can click Stop using drive to stop backups to that drive if you have a different drive you want to back up to.

Your first backup will take a while as there will be many files to copy over, if it does not complete, it will continue the next time you turn on your computer and connect your backup drive
